My husband wears the earliest version of this hat under his hardhat during
cold weather. It uses short rows to shape the earflaps, so the entire hat
is worked in one piece. This pattern is not written as a short-row
tutorial. If you do not know how to work short rows, take a lesson
before you attempt to work this pattern.

A Free Pattern From

HARDHAT LINER – EARFLAP HAT
Materials
worsted weight yarn, about 125 yds
circular knitting needles: 4.5mm/#7 & 5.5mm/#9– I used
24" but you
may be more
comfortable with 16" circulars.
double point needles # 9
stitch markers
Gauge
5 sts/inch with 5.5mm/#9 needles
Using #9 needle, CO 100 sts. Join. Using #7 needle, work 1 rnd k 2, p 2
ribbing, placing marker at beginning of rnd, after 24 sts, after 26 sts, after
72 sts, and after 74 sts.
Begin working back and forth in rows.
Work Chart A. Work in wraps as you come to them, which will be one on every row
after row 1. You will work all of Chart A before working Chart B. Remove markers
at center of earflaps after you no longer need them to help you keep your place.
Work Chart B. Work in wraps as you come to them. Remove markers at center of
earflaps after you no longer need them to help you keep your place.
After Chart B, begin working in the rnd, using #9 needle. Work in wraps as you
come to them. Work even in 2 x 2 rib until cap measures 4.75" from CO
edge (not the earflaps).
Dec rnd 1: Keeping in pattern, work 2, *p 2 tog, work 10*, repeat from * to *
around.
Work 2 rnds in pattern.
Dec rnd 2: Keeping in pattern, work 5, *p 2 tog, work 9*, repeat from * to *
around.
Work 1 rnd in pattern.
Dec rnd 3: Keeping in pattern, *work 8, p 2 tog*, repeat from * to * around to
last 4 sts, work 2, p 2 tog.
Work 1 rnd in pattern.
Remainder of hat is worked in sto st.
Rnd 1: k 5, k 2 tog, k 23, k 2 tog, k 23, ssk, k to end.
Rnd 2: *k 4, ssk*, repeat around.
Rnd 3: *k 3, ssk*, repeat around.
Rnd 4: *k 2, ssk*, repeat around.
Rnd 5: *k 1, ssk*, repeat around.
Rnd 6: ssk, repeat around.
Rnd 7: ssk, repeat around.
Cut yarn, draw tail through remaining sts, and finish off.
